Sandbag defences were placed around the Village Hall in preparation for German air raids. The boys and young men in the picture knew all about such attacks - they had been evacuated from Spain the year before. You can find out about the Basques in Caerleon, in our special feature.

Well they obviously did a good job, because here is the same section of the hall over sixty years later!
