The
Millennium Wildlife garden in Caerleon was a runner-up for a Green
Apple Environment Award, which is part of an international campaign
to find the most environmentally friendly companies, councils
and community projects. The Society's chairman Liz Luck submitted
the garden, giving its history, help given and situation in the
community. The Society was thrilled when they knew they were up
for an award.
In
October, chairman, Liz Luck and committee member Marilyn Custard
went up to the House of Commons where they were shown round by
Paul Flynn [MP for Newport West] and joined others on the terrace
in a marquee for the awards. They were mainly among people from
companies that strive to be environmentally friendly and overseas
projects that filled the criteria. The awards were presented by
the cricketer, Alan Lamb.
The
Event was run by the Green Organisation, which is a non-profit
making environmental group run around the world. National organiser
Roger Wolens said "It is a tremendous achievement to get
on the short list because competition is getting tougher every
year".
Caerleon
and District Civic Society act as a pressure group for local residents
bringing up their concerns with the City Council and working on
Community Projects. Liz said the group were extremely pleased
to have the society's efforts recognised. She would like to say
a very big "thank you" to all those who were generous
with their time and/or money and made it happen. It shows that
small can be beautiful.
