One of Maybery's Original Etched Plates
One of Maybery's original printing plates, probably copper. The design has been etched into the surface of the metal, and, as you can see, everything is reversed so that it would print the correct way round. Ink would have been applied across the whole surface of the plate and then carefully wiped away, leaving ink only in the recessed etched lines. Fortunately, enough of the ink has survived and dried in the grooves over the years to allow us to see the original image.
We have done a little work on the photograph of the plate to give some idea of what the finished etching may have looked like when printed (middle image) the lower picture was produced using Chat GPT.
The building is the King's Arms on Belmont Hill. We have not come across another view of this inn by Maybery, and would be delighted to hear from anyone who has a copy of the original etching. It would be fascinating to compare it with our reproductions and see how closely we have captured Maybery's work.
